Al’ Frank Cookies: Look ma, no flour!

Healthy cookies? Now that sounds too good to be true.

I know many of you want to make healthier choices, but don’t have the time to prepare your own food and snacks all the time. So, I will be reviewing some healthy products from time to time to give you all some ideas for healthy snacks or meals that you can buy at reasonable prices! Every small change counts, but just so long you don’t get obsessive and start counting calories, you’re good 🙂 Remember, calories don’t count, nutrition does!

While these cookies weren’t made by me, they were no doubt made with love.

Al’ Frank Cookies specialise in flourless oatmeal cookies with flavours ranging from Chocolate Chip to more novel flavours like Cranberry Pecan. These gluten-free cookies certainly don’t short-change you and you can taste the love put into making these delicious treats. You won’t realise that they don’t use flour!

I was actually surprised with these flourless oatmeal cookies by my mum who knows that I’m into healthy food and what not. So when she came across this store at Haji Lane, she bought me a pack of Chocolate Chip cookies and Almond Cookies to sample.alfrank4

I liked how the cookies came in a resealable ziploc bag, which makes it much more convenient to store. The cookies are also bite-sized, or rather half-bitesized, so they make very portable snacks for kids and adults alike.

As you can see, the cookies were generously dotted with ingredients (dark chocolate chunks and almond slivers). The cookie base is pretty much the same, with the mix-ins being the differentiating factor. Pretty much the same idea for any cookie store, I would say.

Dark Chocolate Chip Cookie:alfrank2

To be honest, I’m not sure if this is the dark chocolate, but when I ate it, there was a bitterness to the chocolate, which balanced the slight sweetness of the cookie. Ah yes, Al’ Franks cookies are not cloyingly sweet at all, which I would attribute to their use of natural sweeteners and wholesome ingredients.

Almond Cookies:

The almond cookies did not disappoint either, and the almond slivers added a nice crunch to the cookie. A nice textural change I must say. Sadly the almond slivers did not add much flavour wise. Perhaps a combination of chocolate chip and almond would be nice!

This cookie tasted slightly saltier than the chocolate chip cookie, so they may have used salted almonds for the cookie. I’m the kind of person who likes my food either salty or sweet, so I didn’t really like the slight salty flavour. If you like salted nuts, you would enjoy this.

One thing to note is that the cookies do not remain crispy for very long, since no preservatives are used. So enjoy them while they are still fresh and crunchy 🙂

Now who said eating healthy meant a bowl of plain veggies? You can have your dessert, and eat it too! Everything in moderation, I always say.

Rating: 7/10 (P.S. I recommend the chocolate chip cookie!)
